Elected to a third term as president of America’s sporting body
The Chilean Neven Ilic will lead the governing body of sport in the Americas for the next four years, after being re-elected to the position on Wednesday during the LXII General Assembly of Panam Sports, held in Asuncion, Paraguay.
«Our president Neven Ilic will continue to lead for four more years in the 2024-2028 cycle, promoting sporting excellence for athletes across the continent,» the body announced on its Facebook profile, after the election process was held at the Conmebol Convention Center.
Ilic received 37 votes to beat by a wide margin the other candidate for the post, Grenada’s Keith Joseph, who received 16 votes.
«I want to thank all those who supported me, for allowing me to finish this project. These elections are over and I can say that we are a great group. Everyone is part of this project. Of course, I thank my friend Keith Joseph. We will continue working so that America remains a stellar continent,» said the International Olympic Committee (IOC) member after his victory.
After hearing the news, the Cuban Olympic Committee (COC) published on its social networks a greeting for the confirmation at the head of the entity and said that they will continue to strengthen relations for future work.
As part of the day’s work, it was also decided who will occupy the posts of vice-presidents, appointments that fell to Sarah Hirshland from the United States, Veda Bruno Victor from Grenada and Camilo Pérez from Paraguay.
The Assembly’s programme, which will last until Thursday, includes the presentation of reports on the organisation’s management in different areas, and its different committees will meet.
During the conclave, the summit of the Centro Caribe Sport organisation for this year was held and the reports «Traces of Central America and the Caribbean» were presented.
The Dominican Luis Mejía Oviedo, president of this organisation – formerly known as Odecabe – announced that the meeting, which will serve to commemorate the centenary of its foundation, will take place between 11 and 16 November.
