Held every year in January, the Pure Grenada Sailing Week is an annual set of regattas which attracts sailors and yacht enthusiasts from all over the world. There are several different race categories, including classes for different types of sailing vessels, and the event is known for its challenging courses, which offer a mix of coastal and offshore sailing. The tournament is a highly social event, featuring gatherings, award ceremonies and plenty of opportunities for participants and spectators to connect with the local Grenadian community. Whether you’re a seasoned sailor, a professional, a first-timer or just a spectator, everyone’s welcome at this fun, six-day jamboree.

World-class gastronomy
Grenada has some of the best food in the Caribbean (in fact, in 2021 it won the inaugural World Culinary Capital award). Immerse yourself in the island’s local life with freshly caught fish, and don’t miss the island’s speciality oil down, a hearty stew of salted meat or seafood, coconut milk, vegetables and spices served with plantain and breadfruit. Lambi – popular across the West Indies – is large conch shellfish with a sweet taste and buttery texture, often cooked in a broth of lime juice, onion, garlic and hot pepper. Pelau, a Grenadian mid-week favourite is also a must-try – this savoury, one-pot meat and rice dish is popular across the island for a reason. Bon appetit!
If you have more of a sweet tooth, be sure to visit the annual Grenada Chocolate Festival, which will be held on 23-28 May next year. It’s a vibrant celebration of the island’s rich chocolate-making tradition, and showcases its world-class organic cacao. Indulge your sweet tooth with hands-on chocolate-making workshops, cacao farm tours, tastings and culinary experiences, along with culture and wellness events. You’ll learn much about Grenada’s cacao farming practices, and immerse yourself in the island’s heritage and chocolate craftsmanship.

Dance the night away
And if you like a party, don’t miss Spicemas. Held in August, it’s a lively, vivid celebration of the island’s rich cultural heritage, featuring upbeat music, dance and colourful costumes. The annual festival showcases Grenada’s creativity and traditions, blending African, French and Caribbean influences; locals and visitors come together for an unforgettable celebration of freedom, unity and joy.
Key events also include J’ouvert, which occurs early in the morning (hence the name, which is derived from the French words ‘jour ouvert’, meaning ‘daybreak’). Dancers and musicians parade to the sounds of steel drums and calypso, as well as more contemporary Caribbean music such as soca and reggae. The Mas players, or masqueraders, are usually covered in oil, grease or mud, harking back to the days when their aim was to terrify onlookers with their grotesque appearance.
Other spectacular events include Monday Night Mas, a parade of lights held aloft by masqueraders in neon and brightly coloured garments; Panorama, a competition for conventional steel bands; and Pretty Mas, an elaborate display of creativity and artistry, where the traditional Mas players’ costumes feature intricate beadwork, feathers and dazzling embellishments.
Whatever kind of holiday you want to have, Grenada’s mixture of breathtaking landscapes, idyllic beaches and fascinating, immersive culture makes it an unforgettable holiday destination.
