SHREVEPORT, La. (KSLA) — Shreve Memorial Library is celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month now through Oct. 15 at its main library and at its branches throughout Caddo Parish.
Hispanic Heritage Month celebrates the contributions of Americans who trace their roots to Spain, Mexico, Central America, South America and the Spanish-speaking nations of the Caribbean. In 1968, Congress set aside a week for this observance and two decades later expanded it to a month stretching from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15.
The timing is historically significant as Sept. 15 is the anniversary of independence in Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. The designated period also is a nod to those from Mexico and Chile, which celebrate their independence Sept. 16 and Sept. 18, respectively.
Throughout the two-month celebration, Shreve Memorial Library will recognize Hispanic Heritage Month with programs for people of all ages, including arts and crafts workshops, book discussions, movie screenings, food samplings, music and more. All programs are free and open to the public. Registration may be required.
Several Shreve Memorial branches will celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with explorations into Hispanic traditional and folk art. Library patrons will learn about the significance of Molas, textile art that is characteristic of the traditional dress of the Guna of Panama featuring vibrant colors and intricate designs, and of Amate painting, an ancient Mexican tradition of painting paper made of tree bark.
Additionally, library patrons can learn more about traditional Mexican folk art, such as Ojos de Dios (God’s Eyes), symbols of protection and power originating with the Huichol people of Mexico, Taleveras, Mexican hand-painted ceramics, and Hojalata, ornate tin art celebrated for its color and craftsmanship.
Library patrons also will learn about famous Hispanic artists including Diego Rivera, Frida Kahlo and Ines Alvidres while getting an opportunity to create their own inspired art pieces. Hispanic Heritage Month arts and crafts workshops will take place at Shreve Memorial branches throughout Caddo. All supplies will be provided for each program.
Shreve Memorial also will observe Hispanic Heritage Month by highlighting the works of Hispanic authors and characters through book discussions, story time programs and movie screenings. Hispanic Heritage Month story times will take place at:
the Hamilton/South Caddo branch on Wednesday (Sept. 18)the Broadmoor branch on Sept. 25, the Hollywood/Union Avenue branch on Oct. 2, and,at the David Raines branch on Oct. 3, which is a Thursday.
Each story time program will begin at 10 a.m.
In addition, the Mooringsport branch will host a Hispanic Heritage Month-themed story time at noon each Friday on Sept. 20 through Oct. 11.
The Cedar Grove-Line Avenue branch’s Red River Readers Book Club will discuss “The Great Divide” by Cristina Henriquez at its book club meeting Thursday (Sept. 19).
Movie screenings at several library branches will include showings of movies including “Selena,” “Stand and Deliver,” “Encanto,” “Coco” and “Spy-Kids 3D: Game Over.”
Other Shreve Memorial Library branches will incorporate Latin music and foods into their celebrations. Patrons will be able to make their own castanets and maracas, enjoy samples of traditional Hispanic foods and take part in family fiestas featuring games, music, trivia and fun.
All programs are free and open to the public.
