A popular social media travel influencer has named a Central American town “the most underrated place” he has ever been to.
Alfie Watts, best known for winning the most recent series of ‘Race Across the World’, made the claims on his popular TikTok account which boasts nearly 50,000 followers.
Since claiming his half of the £20,000 prize, Alfie has embraced the travelling lifestyle, flying to multiple countries across the world and documenting his experiences and tips across his social media platforms.
After visiting Japan, Brunei and the Caribbean, he believes that a former capital town not visited by many is “incredible”.
Antigua, the former capital of Guatemala used to be the nations capital until an 18th century earthquake brought destruction to the area. Alfie believes that the blend of scenery and culture still makes it a destination that travellers should add to their itinerary.
The town sits within the shadow of Acatenango volcano, which provides popular hiking routes for tourists visiting the area, treating them to spectacular views upon reaching the summit.
Alfie believes that the town is perfect for travellers looking to strike the balance of experiencing culture whilst also feeling safe.
Alfie said: “Antigua is one of the only places I have visited that has nailed the balance between prioritising its tourism department and preserving culture.
“Every street and restaurant felt incredibly safe whilst holding a true feeling of central American tradition.”
The town is accessible on an hour-long shuttle from the nation’s capital, Guatemala City.
Tripadvisor describes the town as being “known as the best-preserved Spanish colonial city in Central America”, with its historic buildings and traditional streets offering visitors an authentic vision of post-colonial Central America.
The town is dominated by the Acatenango volcano, which provides much of its tourism muscle with regular hiking routes up and around the stunning natural landmark.
The town has an abundance of traditional restaurants and, according to Alfie, “pictures just do not do it justice.”
Guatemala has been hit significantly by the Covid-19 pandemic, with tourism figures still languishing at around 76 percent less than they were in 2019.
But the country has plenty to offer. It is a coffee-producing powerhouse with a landscape that rivals any other on the continent. With flights starting at around £500 and the cost of living relatively cheap in the country, it is a destination with a lot to offer and a reasonable price.
