Tropical Storm Nadine has weakened to a tropical depression as it makes its way across Guatemala, after unleashing heavy rain and severe winds on neighboring Belize and Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula.
The storm’s path is set to continue into Mexico’s southeastern states, Chiapas and Tabasco, by Sunday. Initially, the system moved at 13 mph with winds down to 35 mph, according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center.
Authorities in Guatemala released footage showing swollen rivers, advising some communities to evacuate and reinforce their properties. Nadine’s impact extended alongside Belize and Mexico, where affected areas braced for up to 12 inches of rain, prompting warnings from local meteorologists.
