Tropical Storm Sara formed in the Caribbean Sea Thursday afternoon, posing a threat to Central America, where forecasters expect the system to unleash heavy rainfall and flash flooding, according to the National Hurricane Center in Miami.
Sara is the 18th named storm of the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season, which ends on Nov. 30.
Sara had maximum sustained winds of 40 mph at noon while moving west at 12 mph. It is too soon to determine what impacts, if any, the storm will have in the eastern Gulf of Mexico, particularly Florida. Residents in this area are encouraged to monitor the progression of the system.
From the National Hurricane Center.
Forecasters said heavy rainfall will cause “life-threatening” flash flooding across portions of Central America, including Honduras, Belize, El Salvador, eastern Guatemala and western Nicaragua, through early next week. By early next week, the storm is expected to approach Belize and the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico.
NHC’s latest forecast shows Sara peaking as a tropical storm and then weakening to a depression as it enters the Gulf of Mexico.
The storm is not expected to impact Louisiana, according to the National Weather Service of New Orleans.
