Guyana – Houses Destroyed After Severe Floods Hit Two Regions – FloodList

Two regions of Guyana have reported severe flooding after high levels of rainfall particularly in highland areas over the last few days.

A statement by Minister of State Mr. Joseph Harmon said that several rivers had overflowed, including the Ireng River near the border with Brazil.

At least 25 houses have been destroyed and many more damaged. Emergency supplies are being airlifted in to affected communities in remote areas.

Affected Areas Guyana’s Civil Defence Commission (CDC) said that flooding had affected at least 6 villages in Potaro-Siparuni (Region Eight) from around 18 May and more recently several villages in Region Seven.

According to CDC, the villages affected in Cuyuni-Mazaruni (Region Seven) affected are Purima, Kako, Jawalla, Phillipi, Kamarang and Duebamang. Regional Disaster Risk Management Systems (RDRMS) and Regional Disaster Risk Management Committee (RDRMC) have been activated and a team has been deployed to affected areas to conduct assessments.

There have been no reported deaths, missing persons or serious injuries.

In Region Eight the affected villages include Kaibarupai, Waipa, Chenapau, Sand Hill Settlement, Itabac and Kanapang, according to CDC.

Guyana’s Government Information Agency (GINA) reported that 25 houses were washed away at Sand Hill Settlement, with a further 10 under water. GINA added that almost the whole of Waipa village is flooded under water up to 15 feet (5 metres) deep.

During a visit to flood-hit communities in Chenapou on 19 May, Minister within the Ministry of Indigenous Peoples’ Affairs, Valerie Garrido- Lowe, said that a total of 75 residents are affected in the village and supplies will be provided to them for the next three months.

“We visited the health post in Kanapang, at Chenapou, they have medical supplies except for diarrhoea, but we are making a list of supplies, and we will send in those supplies that the residents need,” the Minister explained.

Regional Chairman, Mr. Fredericks said that this is the first time that Chenapau has experienced such levels of flooding.
