Peru announces opening of embassy in Guyana

Peruvian news agency Andina today reported that Lima is to set up an embassy in Guyana for the first time ever.

It is another sign of the growing importance of Guyana which has seen South American and Central American countries setting up missions here

Andina said that as part of his visit to Washington, D.C., Peru’s Foreign Affairs Minister Elmer Schialer held a meeting with the ambassadors and heads of mission of countries from the Caribbean region accredited to the United States of America.

He then announced the reopening of its embassy in Jamaica and the establishment, for the first time in its history, of an embassy in Guyana.

Andina said the Minister announced that a visit is being planned to deepen relations with countries of the region for 2025 to promote trade and investment, as well as to strengthen cooperation.

At the meeting, Minister Schialer expressed that in 2025 Peru will prioritize strengthening its relationship with member countries of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM).

In this regard, the ambassador stated that the mission in Guyana will constitute the permanent representation of Peru to CARICOM.

The Minister also expressed Peru’s desire to conclude negotiations for the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding for the Establishment of a Consultation and Cooperation Mechanism between Peru and CARICOM.
