Suspect in Maryland shooting that killed 6-year-old boy captured in South America

PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY, Md. (WJLA) — The suspect wanted for the murder of 6-year-old Ahsan Payton during a Fourth of July party in Maryland has been captured.

Sources told WJLA 33-year-old Rakeem Gilgeours was arrested by police in Guyana in South America on Monday. The sources said Gilgeours managed to leave the U.S. days after the shooting before he was developed as a suspect.

He's currently detained in Florida and awaiting extradition to Maryland, where he faces second-degree murder and 14 other related weapons and assault charges, according to Prince George's County police.

It is believed Gilgeours opened fire during a dispute with a rival at a celebration. Payton and two adults were rushed to the hospital after the shooting, though Payton succumbed to his injuries days later.

At the time of his arrest, Guyana police said they learned he had been in Guyana since July 8. Guyana officials said he was found in Guyana's capital of Georgetown with $12,000 at the time of his arrest.

On July 23, Prince George's County Police Chief Malik Aziz told council leaders during a podcast that his office had a "great and promising lead," adding that community members provided support in the days after the shooting.

U.S. Marshals Service, the Diplomatic Security Service, Homeland Security Investigations, and Immigration and Customs Enforcement, aided in the arrest.
