On September 22, 2018 local time, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi held talks with Vice President and Minister of Foreign Affairs Carl Gary Greenidge of Guyana in Georgetown. A number of cabinet ministers of Guyana attended the meeting.

Wang Yi expressed that Guyana is the first English-speaking Caribbean country that establishes diplomatic relations with the People’s Republic of China, and an old friend of China in the Caribbean region. The Chinese people will never forget that Guyana stood up to the external pressure and resolutely supported the restoration of China’s lawful seat in the United Nations in 1971. Our two countries have enjoyed equal treatment, mutual respect, mutual understanding, and mutual support for a long time. The Chinese side appreciates that the Guyanese side firmly sticks to the one-China policy, respects the Guyanese people’s rights to independently choose their social system and development path, and is willing to continue combining the real needs of Guyana’s development to further enhance bilateral cooperation.

Wang Yi pointed out that the Chinese side stands ready to, together with the Guyanese side, take the consolidation of political mutual trust as the foundation and the joint building of the Belt and Road Initiative as the driving force to promote China-Guyana friendly cooperative relations to maintain a sound development momentum in the new period. Both sides should continue to understand and support each other on issues concerning respective core interests and major concerns, and constantly enhance bilateral political foundation. Both sides should propel the integration of the building of the Belt and Road Initiative and the Green State Development Strategy of the Guyanese side, expand cooperation space, tap into the cooperation potential, and strive for an early harvest, in a bid to make the joint building of the Belt and Road Initiative as a new highlight for China-Guyana cooperation. Both sides should strengthen people-to-people and cultural exchanges, enhance cooperation in such fields as education, agriculture, sports, tourism, human resources, and public health, and consolidate friendship between the two peoples. Both sides should reinforce cooperation in multilateral affairs to well maintain the interests of all developing countries.

Wang Yi stressed that the Chinese side has always paid great attention to and been actively committed to the deepening of relations with various Caribbean countries, and hopes that the Guyanese side will continue playing the positive role for the relations and overall cooperation between China and the Caribbean countries to push the relations between China and the Caribbean countries for constant and forward-looking development.

Carl Gary Greenidge noted that Guyana and China have enjoyed long-term friendship. Over the past years, both sides have conducted active cooperation in such fields as politics, economy, science and technology, and culture. The Guyanese side thanks the Chinese side for providing support and assistance for Guyana’s development. Guyana has always upheld the one-China principle, and will never waver on this stance. The Guyanese side is willing to make joint efforts the Chinese side to promote the implementation of cooperation agreements on the building of the Belt and Road Initiative, and strive for more outcomes from practical cooperation in such fields as trade, investment and connectivity at an early date. The Guyanese side stands ready to, together with the Chinese side, maintain communication on major multilateral agendas and well safeguard the interests of the vast number of small and medium-sized countries. The Guyanese side supports the enhancement of relations between the Caribbean Community and China.

Both sides also exchanged views on international and regional issues of common concern. After the meeting, two Foreign Ministers signed agreements on economic and technological cooperation between the governments of the two countries and jointly met the press.
