AMERICA/BRAZIL – Brazilian bishops launch call for funds for Haiti
Brasilia (Agenzia Fides) – “It’s time to take care” is the theme of a Caritas campaign that proved to be an effective tool, especially during the Covid-19 pandemic, to ensure a Samaritan presence of the Church in the lives of people affected by the pandemic which has often been neglected by the state (see Fides, 9/6/2021).
On August 14, an earthquake hit Haiti again, killing thousands of people and leaving many others homeless. “Another painful experience for a people already seriously affected”, said Brazilian Bishop Walmor Oliveira de Azevedo in a note sent to Fides.
The President of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Brazil (CNBB) calls on the people to help those affected in Haiti: “Our church, which faithfully follows what Jesus asks of it, is in solidarity with Haiti and invites everyone to make a gesture of love to the Haitian people”. This invitation is reinforced by Mgr. Mario Antonio da Silva, Bishop of the diocese of Roriama, who stresses that “your donation will benefit the families of the earthquake victims in the form of assistance to the thousands of injured, homeless and displaced”.
The second vice president of the CNBB and President of Caritas Brazil emphasized that “the money collected will be used to buy essential goods: food, drinking water, tents, tarpaulins, hygiene and cleaning supplies, medicines, medical supplies, means of transport, fuel and others Things in support of the Haitian people”.
Mgr. Walmor invited everyone to keep this reality in mind: “territorial distances, the differences between cultures, ethnic groups and religions cannot hide this truth: we are one family, the human family, and we are jointly responsible for one another”. (CE) (Agenzia Fides, 14/9/2021)
