AMERICA/HAITI – Appeal of the Bishop of Anse-à-Veau/Miragoâne to pray after the kidnapping of a nun
Fides
Carrefour (Agenzia Fides) – On the evening of Friday, 8 January, unknown persons kidnapped a nun of the Little Sisters of Saint Thérèse of the Child Jesus from the nuns’ residence located at Brochette 99, Commune de Carrefour, in the district of Port-au-Prince. Fides received the call from His Exc. Mgr Pierre André Dumas, Bishop of Anse-à-Veau / Miragoâne, who urges: “Let us pray for her, for her Congregation, for her family, for the Church and for the country. May these horrific inhumane acts stop in this land of Haiti, which was the first in the world to end slavery and human trafficking. Pray that the Lord God will touch the humanity of her captors and lead them to compassion and empathy!”.
The Bishop also expresses “our communion, our solidarity and our spiritual closeness to her great religious family and to the Haitian Conference of religious! And above all, let us pray for her release! Miracles are achieved by bending the knees! Let us entrust ourselves to God and remain united in prayer so that this state of disgrace and inhumanity may end immediately!”.
On November 10, still in Haiti, Father Sylvain Ronald, of the missionaries of Scheut (CICM), was kidnapped in the city of Delmas, then released on November 13 in the heart of the Haitian capital (see Fides, 13 and 16/11/2020).
Haiti is currently suffering from a severe socio-economic crisis which in many cases leads to despair and total insecurity. The population, for several months, has been the victim of armed gangs which have sown terror in certain districts of the capital and now also in other towns. Catholic volunteers and religious congregations no longer know how to distribute the little aid available to the most needy without being attacked, robbed or blackmailed. The Confederation of Religious of Haiti has launched various appeals to the authorities in order to have a minimum of security and consistency in the fight against corruption. Hope remains alive in the country thanks to the many religious and missionaries who continue to help the suffering people on the poorest island in America amidst many hardships.
