Port au Prince (Agenzia Fides) – The situation in Haiti worsens after Hurricane Matthew in the Caribbean has killed 283 people so far, according to the Haitian Ministry of Interior, but the figure is provisional and definitely set to rise because there are still completely isolated areas. The wind and rain destroyed homes, uncovered roofs and flooded entire neighborhoods. In the Dominican Republic there are 4 victims but there is still no official report.
Brother Jeffrey Rolle, General Director of the Redemptorist missionaries, who in Haiti have several houses and three communities in the south (two in Les Cayes and one in Jérémie), which appears to be the most affected part and still with no communications, told Agenzia Fides: “Until yesterday one could reach the area only by helicopter. We received information from father Kenol Chery, Regional Superior of Haiti, who told us that the south is divided from the rest of the country. They managed to talk a few minutes on the phone with the confreres of Les Cayes, where there were floods, landslides and much damage. The parish church in Château is completely destroyed.
All the families of the confreres in the south were affected. Thank God we have not registered deaths or injuries”.
The most violent storm in the past decade is now heading to US shores. (CE) (Agenzia Fides, 07/10/2016)
