Port au Prince (Agenzia Fides) – Last Saturday evening, October 26, 2024, armed gangs under the command of Jimmy Chérizier, alias Barbecue, entered the compound of the Missionary sisters of Charity in Sanfil, looted the convent and the infirmary, and then set fire to the entire building.
This was reported to Camillian missionary Father Cipriano by Sister Paësie, who founded the “Family Kizito” community for needy children in Haiti a few years ago and is a missionary in Haiti.

“The items, which were brutally stolen, are still on sale in the market near Saint Joseph’s School. The sisters have been in this house since 1979, when Saint Teresa of Calcutta opened the center. They have been serving the people of Bas Delmas for 47 years. Every year they have received around 1,500 inpatients and almost 30,000 outpatients here free of charge,” said the missionary.

The entire Bas-Delmas area in Port-au-Prince is considered a “stronghold” of Chérizier, a former policeman who is at the head of criminal gangs that are wreaking havoc on the island. He is blamed for one of the worst massacres in the slums of Port-au-Prince and is currently the most powerful and feared man in Haiti, saying he wants to rid his country “of traditional politicians and corrupt oligarchs.”

Meanwhile, according to the latest agency reports, the Parliament of El Salvador has approved by a large majority an agreement with the United Nations multinational security assistance mission in Haiti to send a military contingent. The agreement, which is under the auspices of the United Nations, provides for the implementation of medical evacuations by Salvadoran troops. Haiti and Kenya had signed the agreement on the mission in July, and El Salvador joined last October 3. (AP) (Agenzia Fides, 31/10/2024)
