AMERICA/HAITI – The Bishops’ Conference reiterates its request for dialogue with political leaders
Port au Prince (Agenzia Fides) – The Secretary of the Bishops’ Conference of Haiti (CEH), Father Ludger Mazile, reveals that some leaders interested in starting the inter-Haitian dialogue process have already made themselves known even if the most important protagonists of the crisis are reluctant to start the talks. Father Mazile therefore renews the call for dialogue, on behalf of the Catholic Church, addressing political leaders in order to resolve the crisis.
Speaking on Tuesday 15 December as part of a Radio Métropole program, the Secretary of the Bishops’ Conference appealed to the sincerity of the protagonists to find a way out of the serious crisis which is paralyzing the country.
The Secretary of the CEH mentioned the membership of a certain number of candidates and their availability to participate in the dialogue but, as long as they belong to little recognized political structures, they will not be able to help move the guidelines of the situation. In fact, the protagonists of the crisis, political figures and committed members of civil society, have less desire to participate in the dialogue, as the representative of the Bishops lamented.
Haiti is experiencing the worst socio-political crisis in its history. After the health crisis caused by the pandemic, society is unable to restart the economy while the Catholic Church raises its voice in defense of the weakest, who are always more numerous among the population.
