Port au Prince (Agenzia Fides) – A strong appeal for the renunciation of violence in all its forms and the wish that this Christmas may be for all Haitians an inexhaustible source of joy, peace and love: these are the feelings expressed by the Bishops of Haiti in their message to the People of God, released at the end of their 123rd ordinary plenary Assembly held in Lilavois, December 2nd.
“As for the current history of our Country, the people of Haiti have been deceived by their leaders for too long” the Bishops said in the message sent to Fides. They recall the low turnout recorded in the recent elections, expression of the people’s lack of interest who, too often, have seen their dreams turn into nightmares by the people in which they had placed their trust: “These deceptions have spawned frustration, defeatism and mistrust”.
They point out: “It is urgent for leaders to listen to the suffering of the people and take political and economic decisions capable of restoring hope and confidence”.
The Bishops, in addressing their message also to politicians, ask to abandon triumphalist attitude and to cooperate to make stability reign in the Country, necessary for its development. They therefore launch an appeal for the victims of hurricane Matthew, in the knowledge that Haitians are a proud people, “always ready to face any type of calamity that strikes us”, and “these moments of great suffering are opportunities that make us experience deep solidarity”.Aware of what the people of Haiti have lived for too long, the Bishops say that today the population is hungry for a genuine renewal at all levels: spiritual, ethical, social and political.
