AMERICA/HAITI – The Bishops recall that “the law is the same for everyone”, even for the Head of State, and invoke dialogue as the only way
Port au Prince (Agenzia Fides) – The Catholic Church is following the steps of the Federation of Lawyers of Haiti, calling on President Jovenel Moise to leave power on February 7, 2021. In a message published yesterday, the Bishops’ Conference of Haiti (CEH) launches a new call for dialogue to find consensus in the current political crisis.
Three days after Resolution 2021-01 of the Federation of Forensic Orders of Haiti, the Haitian Bishops’ Conference broke its silence by advising President Jovenel Moïse to resign on 7 February. The CEH pointed out to the Head of State that “the law is one for all”, referring to Jovenel Moise’s decision to declare the end of parliament on the second Monday of January 2020, thus ending the mandate of senators and deputies.
“The President of the Republic applied the electoral law and the constitution to deputies, senators and mayors in previous years. He thus affirmed the unity of the law for all elected officials, including himself, thus proclaiming that the law is one for all. It seems to us that everyone agrees that no one is above the law and the constitution in the country”, writes the CEH in the note sent to Fides.
The CEH deplores the fact that the country, totally uninhabitable, is on the verge of explosion: “The daily life of the Haitian people is reduced to death, murders, impunity and insecurity. Discontent is everywhere, in almost all areas. Some of the issues are almost impossible to manage, such as: how to establish a provisional electoral council, how to write another constitution”. So it is not only the devastation that makes the country totally uninhabitable, the Bishops deplore, who consider this situation unacceptable.
Faced with this situation, the Catholic Church invites dialogue to find a consensus on the current political crisis. “At the heart of this recurring socio-political and economic crisis, fueled by the poison of hatred and mistrust, it is preferable to seek and find consensus on any thorny issue; this must be built through social and institutional dialogue to avoid disasters”, recommends the CEH, which believes that dialogue is the only way forward to prevent Haiti from sinking into the abyss.
