AMERICA/HAITI – Violence and lack of health facilities aggravate an already precarious situation
Daniel Fuentealba
Port au Prince (Agenzia Fides) – Since the 2010 earthquake that devastated Haiti, 62,600 displaced people have been living in 36 temporary camps on the island. Furthermore, 500,000 people are highly exposed to natural events such as hurricanes and storms, and 60% of the population lives in conditions of poverty and 25 million people are at risk of contracting cholera in 2016. This, according to reports sent to Fides, is the tragic situation in Haiti, where people continue to live without clean drinking water and access to health services. There is also a high rate of violence in the country as well as rampant corruption that prevents the normal course of operations by humanitarian organizations. (AP) (Agenzia Fides 28/10/2016)
