The Brief
Escalating violence in Haiti is making it difficult to get supplies to those in need.
This includes approximately 70 kids in the country that are waiting to be adopted by American families.
The families are pushing to allow the government to bring the kids to the United States to complete the adoption process.
Gangs are believed to be in control of approximately 85 percent of Haiti’s capital city, Port-au-Prince.
The small Caribbean nation is faced with a multi-faceted crisis including political instability, the displacement of over 700,000 people and widespread hunger.
What We Know: For American families looking to adopt children from Haiti, the instability makes the wait longer.
As violence escalates in the country, some parents are worried that nonprofits won’t be able to deliver much-needed food and supplies to the orphanages where their children are waiting.
What They’re Saying: “We reached out to Unicef and they said, ‘where are your kids located? It’s just too dangerous. We can’t get any vehicles out there,'” Michelle Reed said. “So, even that the organizations that have a presence there can’t get the basic necessities to our children. And that’s really scary.”
Reed is one of approximately 70 American families in the process of adopting children in Haiti.
“I have adopted two little boys from Haiti in 2022, and I’m adopting their biological brother,” Reed said.
Her son is 6-year-old Esai.
And Reed isn’t the only one waiting.
Kat Jordan is also waiting to adopt a child from Haiti.
“We were supposed to have a phone call with our daughter the day before, the day before Christmas Eve and then again on Christmas Eve,” Jordan said. “And it didn’t happen. It’s hard to say why, and we don’t know. It’s just everything is unknown and it’s terrifying.”
What’s Next: Parents waiting to bring their children home from Haiti have been begging the U.S. government to grant the kids “humanitarian parole” which would allow the children to come to the United States to finish out their adoptions.
So far, that hasn’t happened.
