Tegucigalpa (Agenzia Fides) – “A politician is not applauded for his good intentions or for his promises in time of elections, but when he fulfils what he said”: this is what Cardinal Óscar Andrés Rodríguez Maradiaga, Archbishop of Tegicugalpa, said last Sunday, September 27, during his homily.
In the Eucharistic celebration held in the Cathedral Minor Nuestra Señora de Suyapa, the Archbishop reflected on the political campaigns and the actions of politicians, who he asked to fulfil what they promise. Although comparisons should not be made, added the Cardinal, “just look at what is happening in the United States, there are no proposals, only attacks by the various candidates”. On September 13, the National Electoral Council (CNE) announced the primary elections in Honduras, while discussions on electoral reforms continue in the National Congress, which have caused rifts in the political sectors, divided between those who want to hold elections under the current law and those who want reforms first. The current electoral law establishes that the CNE must convene the primary elections six months before, scheduled for March 14, 2021, in which candidates for the November 2021 presidential elections must be chosen.
