AMERICA/HONDURAS – “Honduras is sick of hate”, warns Cardinal Rodriguez Maradiaga
Monday, 21 September 2015
Tegucigalpa (Agenzia Fides) – Yesterday Honduran Cardinal Mgr. Oscar Andres Rodriguez Maradiaga, Archbishop of Tegucigalpa, during Sunday Mass said that the country is full of hate and needs to change, because “the future of the world is not found in a life without God and without the reference to the values of the Gospel”. “Our Honduras is sick, sick of hatred. We cannot go on like this, hate only produces more violence and hatred”, said the Cardinal.
According to the note sent to Fides from a local source, the Cardinal was referring to the murder, which occurred last week, of a Honduran lawyer who was defending a deputy and three of his family members involved in an alleged fraud against the State. The Cardinal added: “Honduras belongs to everyone”. We think differently, but that does not mean that we are enemies to be eliminated, life is sacred, only God is the master of life”.
In his homily, Cardinal Rodriguez Maradiaga also noted that an economic system without a heart is the seed of injustice and suffering for many human beings, and that the economic crisis in Honduras joins the plight of poor immigrants. In this century, the world does not open its arms to immigrants but, on the contrary, “builds walls everywhere”, emulating the Middle Ages, when they built “the city surrounded by walls in order not to allow anyone in”. He also complained about the economic crisis that affects young Honduran migrants, forcing them to leave the country. “If in Honduras there is a will to change, to fight corruption and seek justice, this can be done, but without violence or hatred”, he warned.
