My WATT colleague, Roy Graber, brought to my attention a publication from Auburn University entitled “Learning by doing” by Kristen Bowman. It gave me the idea to write a blog about it, so here I am.
The publication is very interesting, because it describes what a small private ag university – the Zamorano – a few kilometers away from Tegucigalpa, the capital of Honduras, has to do with Auburn University. The fact is that both institutions work together to bring students from Zamorano to study or do research at Auburn University.
Zamorano has been very successful with the “learning by doing” educational model. Students get hands-on experience together with top-range professors, and they are able to do research or continue graduate studies elsewhere, like at Auburn.
They have several educational programs, all in the ag sector, but over the years, I have mostly come across people involved in poultry. As a matter of fact, some of their graduates I met a long time ago are still working for large corporations or multinationals, such as Cargill.
If memory serves, I have always met very good students from there. When I worked for the American Soybean Association, we used to organize crash-courses on poultry nutrition for one full week at the Central American Livestock School in Costa Rica in the 80s and 90s, and Zamorano students were a must there. We knew that, in the end, they were going to be successful professionals.
At that time, I even got the chance to personally visit the school once in Honduras. It looked really nice, but photos nowadays on their website look superb.
The Zamorano website says they have students from 35 different nations and that they promote Pan-Americanism. I do know that the school is very well known and has an excellent reputation in Mexico, Central America and northern South America. And yes, they do deserve to be called the Pan-American Ag School. It is truly Pan-American.
So, long story short, it is nice to see that Zamorano is alive and kicking, still providing much needed professionals for the poultry industry in Latin America.
What do you think?
