Costa Rica claim AFECAVOL U17 Girls’ Volleyball Central American Championship title with coach support from FIVB Volleyball Empowerment

Hosts Nicaragua take silver and Belize take bronze at the inaugural event in Managua

Costa Rica’s opposite Amanda Campos awarded the tournament MVP title

FIVB Volleyball Empowerment supported Costa Rica triumphed as the first ever AFECAVOL U17 Girls’ Volleyball Central American Championship gold medallists. Nicaragua, the hosts of the inaugural event held in Managua, took silver. The bronze went to Belize.

The Costa Rica Volleyball Federation (FECOVOL) has been granted CHF 72,000 in FIVB Volleyball Empowerment coach support for their national volleyball teams, in addition to CHF 59,000 in volleyball equipment. Their teams have been benefiting from the expertise of Argentinean coach Christian Lopez Albarellos.

Costa Rica’s U17 girls’ national team cruised through the six-team round-robin tournament undefeated and topped the final standings on a 5-0 win-loss record. They started with a 3-0 (25-14, 25-16, 25-23) sweep of their opener against Belize and followed up with another straight-setter, 3-0 (25-13, 25-19, 25-19) against El Salvador. A four-set victory followed – 3-1 (25-17, 17-25, 25-23, 25-23) over Guatemala. Costa Rica’s fourth game (pictured in the main photo; credits: afecavol.org) proved to be decisive for the title. They managed a hard-fought 3-2 (25-22, 19-25, 18-25, 26-24, 15-9) win over Nicaragua before finishing the race with a 3-1 (25-15, 25-20, 20-25, 25-16) victory over Honduras.

Nicaragua finished runners-up on a 4-1 win-loss record, while Belize completed the podium on 3-2. Guatemala (2-3), El Salvador (1-4) and Honduras (0-5), in that order, took the places from fourth to sixth.

Opposite Amanda Campos, Costa Rica’s best scorer of the championship, was honoured as the tournament’s Most Valuable Player (MVP). The Dream Team was composed of setter Nadia Granados (Costa Rica), opposite Melissa Guerra (Guatemala), outside hitters Emaun Marin (Belize) and Akili Jones (Belize), middle blockers Maria Ebanks (Nicaragua) and Charlotte Martinez (Costa Rica), and libero Dasialynn Thurton (Belize). The latter also took the Best Digger award. Akili Jones, on the other hand, was also named as the Top Scorer and the Best Server. The Best Receiver recognition went to Guatemala’s Harumi Monney.
