The president of Honduras has threatened to force the U.S. military out of the country if President-elect Donald Trump carries out his forthcoming mass deportation.
Honduran President Xiomara Castro warned in a television broadcast message this week that she could decide to have the United States haul out its service members from the Central American country if Trump tries to deport Hondurans with criminal histories back to their home country.

“Faced with a hostile attitude of mass expulsion of our brothers, we would have to consider a change in our policies of cooperation with the United States, especially in the military arena,” Castro said during the Wednesday broadcast.
The U.S., Castro said, maintains military bases in Honduras “without paying a cent for decades,” though the country receives significant foreign aid from the U.S.
The message was the first time that a foreign leader has publicly spoken out against the forthcoming deportation operation in such an opposing way.
Trump has promised to carry out the largest-ever deportation operation in national history, starting with illegal immigrants residing in the U.S. who have previously been ordered removed from the country by an immigration judge and those with criminal arrests and convictions.
Castro would have the authority to give the U.S. military the boot without first getting approval from the country’s legislative branch, Foreign Minister Enrique Reina said in a radio interview following her remarks.

The U.S. maintains the Soto Cano air base and maintains its largest military task force in Central America in Honduras.
The Trump transition team was tracking Castro’s comments and in a statement issued later this week, it told the New York Times that it would work with partners across the region to ensure illegal immigrants who are deported can be returned to their home country.
“The Trump administration looks forward to engaging our Latin American partners to ensure our southern border is secure and illegal immigrants can be returned to their country of origin,” said Trump transition team spokesman Brian Hughes.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has walked back previous comments about not receiving illegal immigrants and said on Friday that the country would be willing to take in citizens of countries that refuse to take back in their citizens.
“We are going to ask the United States that, as far as possible, migrants who are not from Mexico can be taken to their countries of origin. And if not, we can collaborate through different mechanisms,” Sheinbaum said.
