The Honduran government owes around 5.5bn lempiras (US$215mn) to contractors that are currently building infrastructure works around the country, claims construction chamber Chico.

“The contractors have informed us that, according to what has been carried out and what remains to be carried out in 2024, the debt is close to 5.5bn lempiras. It was 6bn before, but some payments have been made, which is good,” Silvio Larios, executive director of Chico, was reported as saying by daily El Heraldo.

Larios added that the government’s commitment was to make weekly payments to contractors, but a lack of coordination with the ministry of finance has affected the companies, to the point at which they have had to request bank loans to continue with the works.

“To avoid suspending the projects, contractors request bank financing but that isn’t an ideal solution because the bank is the only beneficiary in this situation,” he said.

Infrastructure and transport minister Octavio Pineda said that close to 3,500 projects are currently underway in the country, and confirmed that contractors are paid close to 400mn lempiras per week.

“We’re reducing the debt substantially. I believe that we will be up to date within two or three weeks,” Pineda said.
