Heavy rains from Hurricane Michael forced hundreds of people from their homes in Honduras over the weekend as the intensifying storm continues its push towards the Gulf Coast.
On Sunday, the Permanent Commission of Contingencies said more than 260 homes were damaged in the southern part of the country. Some 6,000 people have been impacted by flooding and landslides, the Associated Press reports.
During a press conference Sunday, Honduras President Juan Orlando Hernández said at least 18 people were rescued during the storm.
The storm forced the closure of schools nationwide on Monday.
While there has been no confirmation, local media is reporting several deaths in Honduras, the AP notes.
Heavy rains from the developing system also brought flooding to Costa Rica, El Salvador and Guatemala.

On Sunday, Florida Gov. Rick Scott declared a state of emergency Sunday for 26 counties in the Panhandle and Big Bend coastal region of northern Florida.
“This storm will be life-threatening and extremely dangerous,” Scott said in a statement after an Emergency Operations Center briefing.
