‘Reconsider travel’: U.S. issues 2 alerts, increases 1 due to increased danger

The federal government has issued travel alerts pertaining to two Central American countries.

One alert has been upped due to a higher danger level.

The U.S. State Department issued these alerts for Costa Rica as well as Honduras on Tuesday. This is due to the crime levels of both countries.

However, while Costa Rica’s travel alert is a Level 2 — under which travelers are urged to “Exercise Increased Caution” — the one for Honduras has been increased to a Level 3, “Reconsider Travel”.

“Violent crime, such as homicide, armed robbery, and kidnapping, remains common,” reads the department’s summary of the country. “Violent gang activity, such as extortion, violent street crime, rape, narcotics, and human trafficking, is widespread.

“Local authorities may lack sufficient resources to respond effectively to serious crime incidents. Around resort areas in the Bay Islands, which include Roatan, Utila, and Guanaja, there is a concentration of resources, and these areas are better policed.”

The release adds how “demonstrations occur regularly throughout” Honduras for a variety of political or economic issues. The Honduras Ministry of Health also declared a national emergency due to an increase in dengue cases back in June.

With regards to Costa Rica, the department notes that “Petty crime is common throughout the country.”

“Violent crime, including armed robbery, homicide, and sexual assault, also affects tourists,” the release states.”
