It’s not always easy to spot the signs advertising rooms for rent in Brazil’s largest city. Look carefully around any of São Paulo’s central neighborhoods, however, and you’ll see that they often flank the entrances of so-called cortiços, a common housing type that helps to tell a key part of the story of how the city changed from a modest center of Brazil’s coffee boom to a vast industrial and commercial hub.
