NEED TO KNOWHow the port strike might affect grocery prices
Roughly 45,000 unionized port workers in the eastern U.S., from Maine to Texas, went on strike last night for the first time in 47 years, a move that could impact the economy.
What to know: Dockworkers decided to strike after negotiations for higher wages and a ban on some automated equipment failed, bringing dozens of ports that account for more than half of the nation’s container imports to a standstill. [ABC News]
Potential impacts: The strike could cost the economy up to $5 billion a day and trigger inflation on goods, including grocery items, clothing, cars and even holiday gifts. Experts say small- and medium-size businesses may suffer the most. [USA Today]
What’s next: President Biden has declined to use a law called the Taft-Hartley Act to force workers to reopen ports and get back to work, citing his belief in collective bargaining. Even if he did, it’s unclear how much of an impact it would have. [CNN]

3 QUESTIONS
…about the VP debate
Vice presidential candidates Tim Walz and JD Vance debate tonight. Anthony asked political reporter Andrew Romano what each candidate needs to accomplish.
Anthony: What do the two VP candidates hope to do with this debate?
Andrew: Every VP debate is about three things. First — and most important — is attacking the other ticket. Second is pitching your running mate’s vision. And third is starting to brand yourself for future runs (though I don’t think Walz or Vance would admit it).
Anthony: What do we know about their strategies tonight?
Andrew: I expect Walz to keep using Midwest dad vibes to frame the election as “weird” Republicans vs. “mainstream” Democrats — and to “other” the GOP nominees before they can do it to Harris. Vance’s goal will be to stop defending his past comments and pivot to offense instead.
Anthony: Will it even make a difference?
Andrew: VP debates rarely, if ever, alter the course of an election. But I think this one will be interesting. Even though Walz and Vance come from a similar place, they couldn’t be more different in how they aim to help the people they grew up with.
Go deeper: Here’s everything to pay attention to tonight.
