Casual Classics presents Julio Barreto percussion ensemble Oct. 14 – PickensProgress.com

A Musical Journey through Latin America will be the theme of a concert performed by The Julio Barreto Ensemble on Monday October 14, as part of the Casual Classics 2024-2025 Concert Series. 

This is the date when Columbus Day as well as Indigenous People’s Day is celebrated, and the program will feature Latin American music from Brazil, Argentina, Colombia, Peru, Mexico, Trinidad, Jamaica, and the Dominican Republic. Steel pan will be featured prominently in addition to African-influenced drumming. The recital is at 7 p.m. at Fellowship Presbyterian Church, 389 Bent Tree Drive. 

There will be an opportunity to mingle over coffee, tea and hot chocolate, provided by Red Bean Coffee before the concert from 6:15 pm, and during intermission. 

There is no charge for admission to this concert, although contributions are gratefully received; donations from the series’ patrons cover the expenses of these concerts.

Participating in the concert are world percussionist Scott Douglas of the Atlanta Opera and Ballet orchestras; Chris Riggenbach bassist from Oglethorpe and Emory Universities; percussionist Kevin Leahy, executive director of the Atlanta Pops Orchestra; and Julio Barreto of the Oxford Alabama Performing Arts Center. 

Scott Douglas is a superb and highly talented Musician who brings a rich variety of music styles to concerts, classrooms, parties, and corporate events. 

He offers performances in Piano, Accordion, Steel Drums, Marimba, & General Percussion. As the founder and artistic director of the Atlanta Percussion Trio, Scott Douglas has performed for children for much of his career. As part of the Young People’s Concert Series, Scott’s program, “Around the World in Music,” demonstrates both percussion instruments and wood and clay flutes from many different nations. 

Bassist Chris Riggenbach was born in Gainesville, Florida and grew up in Atlanta. His first instrument was cello. He began playing electric bass in high school, then the double bass in college. Chris has played bass with Josh Groban, Chloe Agnew and many other prominent imusicians and bands. 

For 10 years, Chris led his own jazz trios and performed in show bands on cruise ships. Chris received his bachelor’s degree and master’s degree in jazz studies from Georgia State University. 

Originally from New York, Kevin Leahy has spent more than two and a half decades recording and touring with a variety of Americana and roots rock artists. 

Kevin performed over 150 live shows and appeared in numerous television performances throughout the world while supporting Shawn Mullins’ #1 Adult Top 40 hit “Lullaby (Rock-a-bye).” He spent the majority of 2009 & 2010 on the Zac Brown Band “Breaking Southern Ground” tour, performing with the tour’s support acts–Southern Ground Artists Levi Lowrey, Sonia Leigh, and Nic Cowan (documented in the Pass The Jar DVD. He has served as Executive Director of the Atlanta Pops Orchestra since 2019.

Julio Cesar Barreto is a distinguished pianist, composer, arranger, and producer from Argentina, known for his versatile musical talent and extensive collaborations. He has performed and arranged for numerous high-profile artists, including T.I., Paquito D’Rivera, David Phelps, Griogair (from Netflix’s “Outlander”), Antwan “Amadeus” Thompson and others. He has collaborated with numerous Broadway stars.

Born in Argentina, Julio displayed an extraordinary musical talent from an early age, commencing formal music studies at five and launching his professional career by nine. At sixteen, he studied under the esteemed Argentine pianist Graciela Reca.

Julio’s pursuit of excellence led him to Berklee College of Music in Boston, where he was awarded the Herbie Hancock Celebrity Scholarship. 

In 2018, Julio relocated to the United States to become a Visiting Assistant Professor at Jacksonville State University and he later joined Gadsden State Community College. 

Casual Classics was established in 2007. Over the years, the series has featured many soloists and ensembles associated with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, the orchestras of the Atlanta Opera and Atlanta Ballet, faculty at area colleges and universities, and emerging artists. 

Members of the Board of Directors include Director Calvert Johnson, Kelly Lohman, Lloyd McDonald, Marc Unger, Treasurer Shelly Garstin, and Suzanne Shull as past director. 

Future concerts on the 2024-25 season include: 

Atlanta Symphony members Flutist Christina Smith, harpist Elisabeth Remy Johnson, and violist Zhenwei Shi on January 27, 2025;

The Joe Alterman Jazz Trio, on May 19, 2025.
