Heavy rainfall that began on Friday 26 February, 2016, resulted in flash floods in northern areas of Jamaica in particular the parish of St James.
Significant flooding was reported in several sections of Montego Bay. Roads have been blocked and one man who was trapped in his car in the flood water had to be rescued by crews from St James Fire Department.
There have also been reports of flood damage to some properties in Montego Bay, in particular in the Cornwall Courts area.
Jamaica Meteorological Service issued a Flash Flood Watch for low-lying and flood prone areas of northern parishes on Sunday 28 February 2016. It was later extended until the morning of 29 February.
Jamaica Meteorological Service said:
“A stationary Front currently across the island is expected to continue influencing weather conditions over Jamaica. While, the front is expected to dissipate by tomorrow afternoon. Projections are for showers, which could be heavy at times, to affect mainly northern parishes over the next 12 hours. Flash flooding is likely over some low-lying and flood-prone areas of northern parishes.
“A flash flood watch means that flash flooding is possible and residents are advised to take precautionary measures, keep informed by listening to further releases from the Meteorological Service and be ready for quick action if flooding is observed or if a Warning is issued”.
