News from The Athletic’s Joshua Kloke following the opening match of this tournament: Alphonso Davies has responded to the racist comments Canada defender Moise Bombito received on his personal Instagram after their defeat by Argentina, calling them “absolutely disgusting” to see.
“All (Bombito) did on the pitch was his job. And him getting those messages is unfair, and we continue to stand with him. We’ll continue to support him. We have to raise awareness more,” the newly-appointed national team captain said on Saturday.
Davies himself has been subject to racist comments on his own social media channels. He spoke out against these kinds of attacks in 2020 after he posted a photo with him and then-girlfriend and Canada international soccer star Jordyn Huitema.
“Canada is a diverse country,” Davies said. “(Bombito) having to deal with that, we just want to get the message out that he’s not alone. He has the support of his teammates, of his friends, his brothers. And now we’re here for him. That has nothing to do with football.”
Canada head coach Jesse Marsch added he was also “disgusted” by the comments directed at Bombito.
