Rather than basking in the defeat of the man who beat him out to the top job in US Soccer, Canada head coach Jesse Marsch revealed his disappointment with his home country’s early exit from the Copa America.
The USMNT looked poor in their dismissal from the tournament they were hosting as a 1-0 defeat to Uruguay sealed their departure from South America’s biggest tournament.
Marsch, who is set to lead Canada against Venezuela in the quarterfinals of the competition, did not show happiness in light of Gregg Berhalter’s team’s elimination – even though the former Leeds United manager was beaten to the job by him.
‘I’d like to say that I’m only focused on what we’re doing here in Canada, but obviously I’m paying attention to the U.S. men’s national team as I always do, and like you, I’m sad,’ the coach told a press conference on Thursday.
‘I’m disappointed with the performances, the lack of discipline. There are a lot of things that I think we’ve tried to embody about the game in the U.S., and we’ve always believed in this group of players.

Marsch added, ‘I’m not there every day, so I don’t have my finger on the pulse of what’s going on, but it’s certainly not what we expected coming into this tournament.’
As runners up in a staunch Group A – featuring Argentina, Peru, and Chile – Canada already had to make their way through a gauntlet of a group stage.
Now, they’ll face off against the likes of Group B winners Venezuela – who topped their group of Mexico, Ecuador, and Jamaica.
Canada advanced after losing to Argentina – thanks to a win over Peru and a draw with Chile.
Meanwhile, with the United States, calls have been growing for Berhalter to either resign or be fired following the American humiliation.
Berhalter gave a one-word answer of ‘Yes’ when asked in the aftermath of the defeat on Monday if he was the right man for the job.
Rumors have already started circulating about who could potentially replace him – with Jurgen Klopp a surprise pick for the job.
Fans have called for Berhalter to be sacked, with Jurgen Klopp a surprise name for the job
DailyMail.com columnist Tim Howard even went so far as to say that he could convince Klopp to join the United States.
‘I believe I could make a very compelling argument,’ the legendary goalkeeper wrote. ‘I will personally fly to Spain. I mean it… if we sat around his villa in Spain, I think I could lure him over here. 100 percent.’
Klopp, who just turned 57, has said he’s not done with coaching football yet after his nine-year spell with Liverpool.
‘It’s out of the question that I’ll stop working altogether,’ the German said. ‘But I don’t see myself continuing at the same pace as before at the moment.’
