Lauryn Hill has cited low ticket sales as the reason for canceling her anniversary tour with hip-hop trio the Fugees just days before it was supposed to start.
“Last year, I faced an injury that necessitated the rescheduling of some of my shows,” the Grammy Award-winning singer wrote on Instagram Wednesday.
“Regrettably, some media outlet’s penchant for sensationalism and clickbait headlines have seemingly created a narrative that has affected ticket sales for the North American portion of the tour,” Hill continued. “The trust and faith I have in my intentions and my commitment to my art seem to have been overshadowed by this unfortunate portrayal.”
With that, the “Ex-Factor” singer expressed her gratefulness for the fans who continue to support her music.
“Know that I am not only grateful for those who appreciate and support my art but that I FIGHT and push through all kinds of resistance to put together experiences that mean something for all of us,” she wrote. “I love being able to bring these performances to you!”
Hill added, “Performing for my fans, is a profound exchange of energy and emotion that excites me every time. Every show is a piece of my expression and testament to our connection and shared love for music. I can assure you that no one is more disappointed about not being able to perform than I am.”
While the U.S. tour dates for “The Celebration Continues” tour have been canceled, the Fugees are proceeding with their international shows, for which tickets are still available. Hill mentioned how audiences in the UK and Europe have not seen the Fugees perform together in more than 25 years.
“We’re looking forward to performing at the shows in the UK and Europe in October — and for our fans in North America, when these unforeseen circumstances are resolved, we’ll be back in full force,” the singer wrote on Instagram. “I appreciate your understanding.”
The U.S. leg of “The Celebration Continues” tour was quietly canceled just three days before it was scheduled to start. Ticket holders were getting notices about refunds late Tuesday, according to Variety.
All dates, including the Aug. 25 show at the Xfinity Center in Mansfield, for the U.S. leg of the tour were labeled as “canceled” on Ticketmaster. The U.S. leg of the tour was supposed to start in Tampa, Florida, on Friday and end in Holmdel, New Jersey, on Sept. 21.
This is the third consecutive year that Hill and the Fugees have canceled part of, or all, of their tour, Variety reported.
The Fugees first announced a reunion tour in 2021, but it was postponed and finally canceled in January 2022 with ongoing COVID conditions cited as the reason, according to the outlet.
Hill also had to postpone the remainder of “The Miseducation Anniversary Tour” in November after the singer revealed that she was struggling with vocal issues.
“As many of you may know, I’ve been battling serious vocal strain for the past month. I made it through each show by taking prescribed prednisone, but this can be detrimental to the body when taken in large amounts over long periods of time,” Hill wrote on Instagram at the time. “In order to prevent any long-term negative affect (sic) on my voice and my body, I need to take time off to allow for real vocal recovery so that I can discontinue the medication completely.”
Hill had been doing a couple of one-off shows before the Fugees announced “The Celebration Continues” in June.
She played at several locations including Brazil, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Canada and Las Vegas and also performed on the BET Awards telecast on June 30.
