Man arrested in South America in connection to 6-year-old Maryland boy’s murder

PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY, Md. (DC News Now) — Police said that a man was arrested in Guyana in connection to the deadly shooting of a 6-year-old boy at a Fourth of July block party.

Prince George’s County police officers responded to a shooting in the 4500 block of Akron St. around 8 p.m. on July 4. When officers arrived, they found two adults and Ahsan Payton, 6, who had been shot.

Police said the two adults (a man and a woman) had non-life-threatening injuries.

Medics took Payton to the hospital for treatment. He died from his injuries two days later.

As the investigation developed, detectives found that the shooting happened during a block party in the community. Police identified the suspect as 33-year-old Rakeem Gilgeours.

The Prince George’s County Police Department said Gilgeours was caught in Guyana, South America by the Criminal Investigation Department and the Special Branch of the Guyana Police Department.

He was charged with second-degree murder and related charges, according to police.

Gilgeours was deported back to the United States and is awaiting extradition in Florida.
