Mexico have announced the five players that were cut from the Copa América list to make the official 26-player one. Manager Jaime Lozano announced the final list which also suffered the modification of subbing out injured goalkeeper Luis Malagon.
The call up list is the following:
Goalkeepers: Carlos Acevedo (Santos), Julio Gonzalez (Pumas), Raul Rangel (Chivas)
Defenders: Johan Vasquez (Genoa), Cesar Montes (Almeria), Jorge Sanchez (Porto), Israel Reyes (America), Gerardo Arteaga (Monterrey), Jesus Orozco (Chivas), Brian Garcia (Toluca), Bryan Gonzalez (Pachuca)
Midfielders: Edson Alvarez (West Ham United), Orbelin Pineda (AEK Athens), Luis Chavez (Dynamo Moscow), Luis Romo (Monterrey), Erick Sanchez (Pachuca), Cesar Huerta (Pumas), Roberto Alvarado (Chivas), Carlos Rodriguez (Cruz Azul), Jordi Cortizo (Monterrey), Marcelo Flores (Tigres)
Forwards: Santiago Gimenez (Feyenoord), Julian Quiñones (America), Guillermo Martinez (Pumas), Alexis Vega (Toluca), Uriel Antuna (Cruz Azul)
The five players that were cut from the list were the following: Fernando Beltran (Chivas), Jordan Carrillo (Santos), Victor Guzman (Monterrey), Alexis Peña (Necaxa) and Andres Montaño (Mazatlan).
While overall there were few surprises, there were some nonetheless. Young stars like Bryan Gonzalez and Marcelo Flores were expected to be part of the cut list and yet made the final one. This is especially surprising with Flores, as he got injured and missed the match against Bolivia, so he failed to play in any of the friendlies. Of the more surprising cuts were Fernando Beltran and Victor Guzman, who both probably were cut after their terrible performances in the Uruguay match, where Mexico were outclassed in a 4-0 loss.
Mexico will make their debut against Jamaica on June 22 in Houston, Texas. They will then play Venezuela in Los Angeles on June 26th and close out their group stage participation in Phoenix on June 30th in Phoenix.
