AI skills are in short order in Mexico, where 80% of companies are facing major difficulties in recruiting professionals who know their way around artificial intelligence.
Rubén Mugártegui, General Manager of AWS Mexico, revealed at a recent summit in Mexico City that 2.5 million technology positions remain vacant across Latin America, highlighting a severe talent shortage amid the rapid growth of AI adoption.
Mugáretegui emphasized that while AI is driving rapid business changes, the lack of skilled workers is a significant obstacle.
The situation is particularly acute in Mexico, where 85% of large enterprises are prioritizing IT hires.
Mexico’s IT sector employs 2.3 million people and contributes over US$64.3 billion to the economy, AWS said citing an unnamed study conducted in 2023. Tech experts at the summit stressed the urgent need to increase AI education, starting with children.
Cindy Polin, Solution Architect Lead at AWS Mexico, underscored AI’s growing importance across all industries, including the public sector. She emphasized that while digital transformation promises to revolutionize operations, its success hinges on access to skilled talent.
To address the shortage, companies are urged to invest in both AI training programs for new hires and upskilling initiatives for existing employees. AWS itself is committed to training 500,000 people in cloud and AI technologies over the next few years.
