These electric cars will not be sold to private or corporate customers, but will be used for Didi’s app-based transport service. To put those 100,000 EVs into context: In 2023, a total of 9,278 battery electric cars and plug-in hybrids were sold in Mexico. This year, 19,096 BEVs and PHEVs have already been newly registered.
It is not yet known which electric car models Didi intends to use in Mexico. The ride-hailing service provider has several partnerships with Chinese car manufacturers. The BYD D1, for example, has been available since 2020; the compact model with sliding rear doors has been optimised for ride-hailing services and uses BYD’s Blade battery with LFP cells. A self-driving electric car is being developed together with GAC Aion, and the Mona M03 saloon, which has been on the market in China since last week, is the result of the collaboration with Xpeng.
Andrés Panamá, General Director for Latin America, Africa and the Middle East at Didi, explained the decision in favour of electric cars to the portal Mexico Now, citing Didi’s experience in China: 57 per cent of the kilometres driven by Didi drivers there are in electric cars – which are significantly cheaper to run than combustion engines and also reduce CO2 emissions in cities.
