The Nature Conservancy, an influential environmental nonprofit, now has a “Gulf of America” director.
Bob Bendick, who was previously the group’s Gulf of Mexico director, has a new title in the wake of President Donald Trump’s move to rename the international body of water. The Nature Conservancy has also updated its website to refer to its conservation work in the “Gulf of America.”
Environmental and conservation groups — like other organizations that work in or publicly refer to the Gulf — are now confronted with a choice on how to label the body of water.
They can follow Trump, who renamed the Gulf in an executive order and proclaimed the first-ever “Gulf of America Day,” or snub the president’s directive and maintain their existing references to the Gulf of Mexico.
