Following an executive order by President Donald Trump to rename the Gulf of Mexico, Google officially updated the region’s name to the Gulf of America on Maps on Monday.
“As we announced two weeks ago and consistent with our longstanding practices, we’ve begun rolling out changes to reflect this update,” the tech company said in a statement.
Google previously addressed “a few questions” about the name change request in a series of posts on X on Jan. 27.
The company said that it has “a longstanding practice” of renaming locations when “they have been updated in official government sources,” referring to the Gulf and Denali, a mountain in Alaska that Trump wants to revert to Mount McKinley.
However, while users in the United States see the region labeled as the Gulf of America, users in Mexico continue to see it as the Gulf of Mexico, according to Google’s statement on Monday. Users around the world will see both, displayed as “Gulf of America (Gulf of Mexico).”
Names seen on the Maps app are based on the user’s country location, which is determined by the user’s phone’s operating system, SIM and network, Google added.
Early declarations to change the name drew criticism from President Claudia Sheinbaum of Mexico.
She previously suggested, sarcastically, during a press conference that North America should be renamed to “América Mexicana” or “Mexican America” to reflect an 1814 document preceding Mexico’s constitution, The Associated Press reported in January.
Weeks later, she sent a letter to Google asking them not to make the name change to the gulf.
During his inaugural address, Trump also said Denali would revert to its prior name, Mount McKinley, after President William McKinley. He followed this with an executive order issued that same day.
In 2015, President Barack Obama’s Department of the Interior renamed Mount McKinley to Denali, the Koyukon Athabascan word for “the high one,” the AP reported.
