The Clásico De México match at NRG Stadium drew over 54,000 Club America and Chivas de Guadalajara fans Sunday evening, one of the largest crowds for the Liga MX in the U.S. and Mexico this year, PRIMETIME Sports announced in a press release.
The long-standing rivalry “did not disappoint.” On opposite ends of the soccer field, two prominent fan sections cheered their team with grand roars. The roaring became even louder when the Aguilas del Club America scored two goals in the first half.
The goals from their rival didn’t stop Chivas fans from cheering on their team.
Over the summer when the match between the two largest clubs in Mexico was announced by Houston officials and organizers, Club America player Alejandro Zendejas said he was most excited to bring the match to Houston fans.
“We know how intense it is down there in Mexico. So to be able to bring that over here to the States, for the people of Houston, it’s going to be a good time,” Zendejas said in August.
Sure enough, fans brought massive flags that blanketed the fan sections. Club America fans brought several, including one with a Super Saiyan Goku image on it.
But that’s not the only thing the fans brought. Around minute 83 of the historic Clasico de Mexico match, Chivas fans began flaring red and white smoke bombs—some of which were thrown onto the field. The game continued as announcers warned fans of the prohibited items.
Yellow smoke bombs were then seen from the opposite direction, leaving a hazy scene during the last 10 minutes of the game. At least one person was escorted out of the stands.
Club America won the match 2-0. PRIMETIME Sports wrote that this game adds to their impressive list of record-setting Clásicos and sets the city as one country’s premier soccer cities.
Houston is set to host the 2025 CONCACAF Gold Cup and the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
