Mexico are one of the most storied teams in the world of international football.
Having competed at FIFA World Cups, as well as CONCACAF and CONMEBOL tournaments, El Tri are great entertainers at any competition in which they take part. The name of the Aztecs has also been inscribed in the most historic of all South American tournaments: the Copa America.
Mexico secured their place at the 2024 tournament in the United States back in November 2023, defeating Honduras in the CONCACAF Nations League semifinals to qualify. It was far from an easy route to the finals: Edson Alvarez scored in the 11th minute of second-half stoppage time in the clash at Azteca Stadium before El Tri won a penalty shootout 4-2 at the end of the second leg, Honduras having threatened a huge shock by winning the first game 2-0.
They were placed into Group B for the tournament, alongside Ecuador, Venezuela, and Jamaica. The relatively kind draw means hopes are high that they can reach at least the quarterfinals in 2024.
How many Copa America titles have Mexico won?
The Mexico men’s national team have not yet won the Copa America. El Tri are among the teams to have played at more than one edition of the main CONMEBOL tournament (and in more than one final), but without tasting glory — for now, at least.
How many Copa America finals have Mexico lost?
Mexico have lost two Copa America finals.
At the 1993 edition in Ecuador, CONMEBOL decided to invite USA and Mexico to take part for the first time. That meant the Copa America had 12 teams instead of the usual 10. El Tri advanced as one of the best third-placed sides (in Group C, they lost 2-1 to Colombia, drew 1-1 with Argentina, and 0-0 with Bolivia). Consecutive victories followed: 4-2 against Peru, and 2-0 over host nation Ecuador, in the quarterfinals and semifinals, respectively.
In the final, Mexico lost 2-1 to Argentina. Two goals from Gabriel Batistuta, despite an earlier equaliser from Benjamin Galindo with a penalty, gave the Albiceleste the title.
At Colombia 2001, Mexico reached the final again. They finished second in Group B behind Brazil, whom they defeated 1-0 in their opening game (they then played out a goalless draw with Paraguay and lost 1-0 against Peru). A 2-0 win against Chile, and a 2-0 victory over Uruguay, allowed them to reach the title match against the host nation.
In the final at El Campin in Bogota, a single goal from Ivan Ramiro Cordoba secured the 1-0 win by which Colombia won their first Copa America — something that Mexico have, up to now, failed to do.
