This will be the first time since 2016 that either of these nations is competing in the Copa America. Mexico has had a little bit of success when they have been invited to the tournament, losing in the championship matches in 1993 and 2001, finishing third three times. In their first trips to the CONMEBOL event, Jamaica has bowed out in the group stage.
All that said, Mexico has had a lot of turnover in recent years. Though the have some experienced players patched in some younger talent, El Tri did not look good in their losses to Uruguay and Brazil in Copa America tune-ups. However, with guys like Julian Quinones, Mexico is still expected to be hanging near the top of the group.
Jamaica has always been a dark horse during CONCACAF competition, but against international powers south of Latin America, it has not been easy. Along with issues with players calling for better training resources and timely payments from the Jamaican Football Federation, there seems to be some uneasiness with the Caribbean nation heading into the tournament.
Mexico is 22-5-5 against Jamaica, including a 3-0 win in their last meeting in the 2023 Gold Cup Semifinal.
