Mauricio Pochettino made a last-minute decision to send several key players back to their clubs. According to U.S. Soccer, Marlon Fossey, Weston McKennie, Ricardo Pepi, and Zack Steffen were withdrawn due to minor injuries. In addition, Christian Pulisic will sit out as a precaution. The heavy minutes played this season have taken a toll on the Milan winger, and to avoid any risk of overexertion or injury, he was sent back to rest and recover.
“As we’ve said before, we always prioritise the best interest of our players and maintain a strong relationship with their clubs,” Pochettino explained after the announcement. The coaching staff opted not to call up replacements for the departing players, leaving the final roster at 21.
Mexico’s Losses
While the U.S. felt the brunt of the ‘FIFA Virus,’ Mexico is breathing a sigh of relief with minimal disruptions. Aguirre has lost only one player during this international break. On October 7, it was announced that striker Henry Martín had withdrawn due to muscle discomfort, with Erick Lira stepping in to replace him.
