El Clásico de México will take place in Houston at NRG Stadium for the first time. City officials and organizers held a press conference on Monday, August 12, 2024.

You could get a chance to see the two biggest soccer clubs in Mexico’s league square off in Houston.

El Clásico de México, a friendly match event between the Chivas of Guadalajara and Mexico City’s Club América, will take place at NRG Stadium on October 13 for the first time. This match has also been held in Los Angeles, Chicago, Dallas, and Atlanta in the past.

Alejandro Zendejas is a Club América player. He said during a press conference on Monday that he’s looking forward to seeing the fans at NRG Stadium.

“It’s exciting times, especially for a game like this,” he said. “We know how intense it is down there in Mexico. So to be able to bring that over here to the States, for the people of Houston, it’s going to be a good time.”

The last Clásico de México in Los Angeles drew over 60,000 soccer fans to the Rose Bowl. David Fletcher is the General Manager of Lone Star Sports and Entertainment, which manages events for the Houston Texans. He said he’s expecting a similarly large crowd in October.

“We’re looking forward to a great crowd. We saw that already this summer with the three Copa América matches here, with last week’s Tigres-Inter Miami match,” he said. “NRG Stadium and the City of Houston continue to be a significant destination in the sport.”

Fletcher added the city has been building its soccer scene for two decades. The Athletic, a domain of the New York Times, reported earlier this year one of Houston’s games for the Copa América sold out despite low turn-out in other areas of the United States.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup will also have seven matches taking place in Houston. Vice President at the Harris County-Houston Sports Authority, Chris Massey, said this match is one of many ways the city is leading up to the World Cup.

“Although the World Cup may be out on the horizon, you’d be mistaken if you didn’t look at this as one of the marquee matchups coming into our community this year,” he said.

Fans can now start registering for pre-sale tickets for the Clásico de México, and general public tickets will go on sale by August 22.
