It’s no secret that America’s southern border is in shambles.
28% of Americans believe that immigration is the most important issue facing the United States. Why is this the case? In several areas across the border, there is little security. Some 80% of the border is not secure enough to stop illegal entry due to a lack of physical obstructions and barriers.
More than 8 million migrants have crossed the border since President Biden took office, according to the U.S. Customs and Border Protection. This is the largest spike in illegal immigration in history. In 2023, there were nearly 860,000 people who did not encounter border patrol at all. Under the Biden administration, the number of convicted-criminal-noncitizen encounters by the U.S. Border Patrol has also increased. These encounters range from illegal weapons possessions/transport/trafficking, assault/battery/domestic violence, burglary/robbery/larceny/theft/fraud, driving under the influence, homicide/manslaughter, illegal drug possession/trafficking, illegal entry/re-entry, and sexual offenses. In every one of these sectors, encounters under the Biden administration have spiked dramatically compared to the Trump administration.
There are a few issues directly linked to Biden’s policies that have created such a crisis.
First, Biden has revoked the Remain in Mexico policy issued by President Donald Trump during his administration. In effect, the policy declared that individuals seeking asylum must wait in Mexico first until their court date. By removing this policy, Biden instead has de facto allowed a “catch-and-release” program where anyone who claims asylum is released into the interior of the United States. When the court date arrives, the individuals are supposed to present themselves. In reality, most of these people disappear into the United States; after all, the incentive structure is completely distorted.
Why is the influx of illegal immigration at the southern border an issue? Primarily, female migrants are usually raped or assaulted by the drug cartels that bring them to the border. By continuing to allow the border to be penetrated, a system of women and girls losing their rights and dignity is perpetuated. Some 60 to 80% of female migrants from Central America are sexually assaulted during their travels.
In 2023 alone, there were more than 74,000 Americans who died from a fentanyl overdose. Unfortunately, nearly 90% of illicit fentanyl is seized at the southern border. In fact, China actually subsidizes production of fentanyl. From a national security perspective, it is imperative to combat this flow of drugs as well.
Of course, illegal immigration places a disadvantage on those who legally wait and do not have the ability to simply go across the border. Many presidential candidates, who have promised to tackle illegal immigration, have declared that one’s first act of entering the country should not be breaking the law.
Though most migrants may have good intentions and seek better lives, border towns with populations of a few thousand cannot handle the influx of immigration. The strain on resources, increased crime, overpopulation, and limited resources and jobs are all factors contributing to the disillusionment of these Americans. In turn, states have begun to bus migrants to cities claiming to be sanctuary cities (places where individuals will not be deported despite federal immigration law). Still, even places like New York City and Chicago, which are “sanctuary” cities, have not been able to cope with the large spike of migrants. In other words, even some of the most urban centers, which have significantly more resources than border towns, decry the influx of migrants.
To combat the crisis, President Biden has recently instituted an executive order to prohibit those who entered the country without legal permission from receiving asylum. However, this has drawn intense legal scrutiny.
Overall, illegal immigration is a complex and significant issue that must be dealt with. Inaction may result in political losses in 2024. At the end of the day, Americans deserve security and protection. The border must be secured.
