President-elect Donald Trump will rename the Gulf of Mexico as the “Gulf of America” in one of his first executive orders, according to ABC News.
Trump proposed renaming the Gulf of Mexico earlier this month in a press conference from his residence at Mar-a-Lago.
“We’ll be changing the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, which has a beautiful ring,” he said at the time. “That covers a lot of territory, The Gulf of America. What a beautiful name. It is appropriate. It’s appropriate. And Mexico has to stop allowing millions of people to pour into our country.”
The idea was met with both ridicule and support from Alabama residents and officials.
Now, ABC is reporting that one of Trump’s first executive orders after he is sworn in Monday will be to rename the Gulf of Mexico.
Typically, the U.S. Board of Geographic Names has jurisdiction over what American geographic features are named, according to ABC. But presidents can rename geographic features and regions via executive order.
