Valpo's Kin Khao Thai & Sushi to be featured on America's Best Restaurants

A growing Thai and sushi restaurant in Valparaiso will be featured on the America's Best Restaurants show.

Kin Khao Thai & Sushi Bar at 1202 Formula Drive, Valparaiso will host America’s Best Restaurants' "ABR Roadshow" on Aug. 22. Owners Richard and Ittaya Kolasa will be interviewed for a show that will air online and on social media.

American's Best Restaurants is a national media and marketing company that shines a spotlight on locally owned restaurants. It's filmed more than 1,500 episodes around the country.

Ittaya Kolasa grew up in Thailand, where she was was raised on a farm. She and her husband Richard, who was a journeyman electrician, opened the restaurant in 2019. He initially worked two jobs before quitting his electrician work to focus on the restaurant full-time just before the coronavirus pandemic struck. They welcomed twins in 2020.

After the restaurant lost its staff during the pandemic, Ittaya Kolasa ended up working in the restaurant until the day she gave birth and came back to work a week later.

“No matter how hard times get and the struggles that come upon us, we find a way to overcome them,” Richard Kolasa said. “Our greatest achievement is overcoming hardships in life and fighting back against them to pursue our passion and love in life and who we are.”

The show will share their story and feature dishes like Pad Thai, Spicy Basil, Panang Curry and Crispy Roasted Duck.

Kin Khao Thai & Sushi Bar is in the process of opening a second location at the former Dark Star of the Dunes roadhouse at 3860 W. Dunes Hwy in Pines in the Duneland area of Porter County.

Kin Khao plans to limit the focus of the original location in Valparaiso to Thai food, saying there are too many sushi places in Valpo. The Pines location will have the full sushi menu, including top sellers like the Dragon Roll, Playboy Roll and Green Bay Roll.

The menu also includes street food like pho, curry, Ramen and fried rice. The owners also hope to open a third location somewhere in Northwest Indiana.

America's Best Restaurants last filmed in Valparaiso at Martinis Scratch Kitchen and Lounge in January 2023.
