Micron, Dept. of Commerce finalize $6.1B agreement for Central New York investment

SYRACUSE (WBNG) — Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer announced Micron and the Department of Commerce finalized their CHIPS agreement on Tuesday.

The agreement will allow for up to $6.1 billion in direct funding through the bipartisan CHIPS & Science Law.

The funding will support Micron’s $100+ billion public-private investment into a Syracuse-based semiconductor manufacturing campus over 20 years.

The project received recognition from Governor Kathy Hochul and President Joe Biden, who visited the planned facility site in October 2022 and called it a “win for the country.”

Senator Schumer has been a proponent of Micron establishing the plant in Syracuse for years.

“The signed CHIPS award is the start of a new chapter for Central NY and America,” Schumer said. “Today the feds make the bold investment needed to bring manufacturing back, to strengthen our national security and to make sure America stays number one with Micron and Central NY leading the way.”

A semiconductor facility expansion is also planned for Idaho.

Micron is a US-based memory and storage manufacturer and the fourth-largest producer of semiconductors in the world.
