ZEELAND, Mich. (WOOD) — MillerKnoll has announced that every North American product from its upcoming slate of products will be completely PFAS-free — claiming to be the first office furniture manufacturer to do so.

“At MillerKnoll, our products meet or exceed global PFAS regulations, but we are dedicated to setting the pace in creating products and spaces that go beyond minimum safety standards,” Vice President of Sustainability Gabe Wing said in a news release.
According to Wing, few MillerKnoll products still contain any PFAS, but going forward, the “forever chemicals” will be avoided altogether.
“We are committing to not adding any PFAS to our products in North America from May of next year and to extend this commitment globally by fiscal year 2027 ahead of future regulations.”

PFAS — or per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances — are a large group of compounds first developed in the 1940s and incorporated into all sorts of products for waterproofing and heat resistance. According to the National Institute of Environmental Health Services, there are now more than 15,000 known PFAS compounds, adapted in a countless number of products.
However, decades later, research showed that PFAS compounds take a long time to break down organically and can build up in the human body, causing serious health problems, including cancer.
The Environmental Working Group says there are now more than 5,000 confirmed PFAS-contaminated sites across the United States, including at least one in all 50 states, Washington D.C. and two American territories. As of October, 329 have been identified in Michigan.
